Omelet Trees Studio

SEEKING THE SLOW LIFE

Omelet Trees Studio represents a moment of calm; an oasis of slow making.

With each unique vessel, clay is transformed from raw form, endlessly impressionable, to a vitrified ceramic ware that encapsulates contemporary form and elegant function.

Each handcrafted piece bears the human touch of the maker’s hands and is the soulful manifestation of mindful crafting – a quiet defiance of the relentless buzz from the urban jungle that is the island-city of Singapore.

Freshly thrown: one-off soon-to-be cups, from unmeasured balls of clay. This is Pottery at its best in our opinion; no dimensions needed, no strict design requirements, just allowing the clay to be what it wants to be. Here they are drying out slightly. As soon as the rims are firm enough, they are gently flipped upside-down to allow their bottoms to dry as well. The base of vessels usually have more clay left in them when they're thrown, especially when a turned footring is intended at a later stage. For this reason, it's crucial that the base is given the time and space to dry adequately before the rims dry out completely. If drying is uneven, we've found that the likelihood of S-cracks forming on the base becomes higher. Of course, proper compression and technique during the actual process of throwing, among other factors, play a role as well. ___________________ #clay #ceramics #keramik #pottery #potterysg #sgpottery #sgmakers #sglifestyle #omelettrees #makersgonnamake #makermovement #smallbatch #handmade #handcrafted #handmadeceramics #madeinsg #potteryforall
#tbt to when we had these dimpled cups in stock. Inspired by the beach, by the crashing waves on the seashore. Being city dwellers of this concrete jungle, there is very little opportunity to head to the coast for the sun, sand, and sea. Making pots that reminisce our happy moments along the beach is one of the means of capturing and sealing such memories, an attempt to save them for another day - a day like today. _____________ #clay #ceramics #keramik #pottery #potterysg #sgmakers #sgpottery #sglifestyle #omelettrees #makermovement #handmadesg #handmadeceramics #smallbatch #handcrafted #handmadeisbetter #madeinsingapore #madeinsg #potteryforall #throwback
Nice to have a clean foot! To ensure we get a base like this, an extra step to wipe the footring clean of glaze is necessary to prevent the cup from fusing to the kiln shelf during firing. Some potters use wax to coat the base before glazing and allow the wax to burn off the kiln, but we've read that the fumes from the burnt wax is actually rather hazardous, so we stay away. An alternative that we've seen people use, that we'd like to try is latex resist. Applied before glazing and peeled off after. Kinda like liquid masking tape? In the meantime, the old school sponge, water, and elbow grease will have to do. How do you clean your pot bottoms? ___________ #clay #ceramics #keramik #pottery #potterysg #sgpottery #sgmakers #sglifestyle #omelettrees #makersgonnamake #makermovement #smallbatch #handmade #handcrafted #handmadeceramics #madeinsg #potteryforall
Often porcelain or bone china is hailed as a difficult medium to work with. Because it is a lot less elastic in nature, throwing is more tricky since the its texture is close to that of butter or wall putty. One thing that is unparalleled though, which is the purity of the white in the porcelain. Here is an orb and a flower, not in a white gloss glaze, but rather just a simple clear gloss! The white comes from the clay body itself. Clear gloss forms a protective waterproof layer and echoes the glazes on an oil painting, translucent and magical. Can't wait to get some time in for more of this! _____________ #clay #ceramics #keramik #pottery #potterysg #sgmakers #sgpottery #sglifestyle #omelettrees #makermovement #handmadesg #handmadeceramics #smallbatch #handcrafted #handmadeisbetter #madeinsingapore #madeinsg #potteryforall #porcelain #bonechina
Always a good thing to have time on the wheel. These days don't come around too often, but we make the best of it. After a month off, here's a pot from about 1.5kg of clay. It's like cycling; you never forget, you only get a little rusty! ______________ #clay #ceramics #keramik #pottery #potterysg #sgpottery #sgmakers #sglifestyle #omelettrees #makersgonnamake #makermovement #smallbatch #handmade #handcrafted #handmadeceramics #madeinsg #potteryforall
Every once in a while, when we're in the kitchen, the thought of needing a specific piece of tableware comes to mind. "You know, we could do with a few bowls of this particular size, and shape." And of course, the next thought that follows is "Oh hey, we can make them ourselves!" One of the most wonderful things about being a potter is the ability to make bowls, plates and cups the exact way you want them. It's personal customisation at its best. To be able to create something so functional, so permanent, (arguably so beautiful as well), is a luxury in itself. Here we have a small batch of side bowls made to match the current set we have. After something like a gazillion meals, we have only finally come to realise we need medium-sized servings bowls for various dips or dishes. These lovelies will be finished in glossy Cloud Grey. _______________ #clay #ceramics #keramik #pottery #potterysg #sgpottery #sgmakers #sglifestyle #omelettrees #makersgonnamake #makermovement #smallbatch #handmade #handcrafted #handmadeceramics #madeinsg #potteryforall
Working on a shop update soon! It's been a few busy weeks with very little time for making in the studio. But we go along slowly and remind ourselves that the best things are worth waiting for. Here is a vase that has been into the kiln a total of four times. The original glaze that we used didn't quite do what we liked so we reapplied another layer of glaze to fix it, but that didn't really work it either. So one more round of glazing and firing for a final coating of this luscious colour. Very satisfied with it finally! _____________ #clay #ceramics #keramik #pottery #potterysg #sgpottery #sgmakers #sglifestyle #omelettrees #makersgonnamake #makermovement #smallbatch #handmade #handcrafted #handmadeceramics #madeinsg #potteryforall
Been some time since we did a #wedgingwednesday post! Not that we only wedge clay on Wednesdays 😂 One of the best things about spiral wedging is being able to wedge practically any amount at a go. Because the gesture of compression is performed repeatedly over the same part of the clay lump, the effort needed is essentially the same for each push, whether the ball is small or large. Of course, larger ball of clay means more repetitions of wedging than a smaller ball. ___________ #clay #ceramics #keramik #pottery #potterysg #sgpottery #sgmakers #sglifestyle #omelettrees #makersgonnamake #makermovement #smallbatch #handmade #handcrafted #handmadeceramics #madeinsg #potteryforall
Managed to catch a good shot of these cups before they went to a new home. Imagining how they would look like with other similar forms and colours. We've never actually made complete tableware sets because of the small scale of work that we do. But looking at how beautiful these cups and bowls from our Comfort series match up, we might just make a complete dinnerware set or two sometime soon! We do miss these Comfort cups now that they're sold out, but the rounder bowl counterparts pictured here are still available on the online shop! Good thing we've kept a couple to hold our pokébowl meals. ;) _______________ #clay #ceramics #keramik #pottery #potterysg #sgmakers #sgpottery #sglifestyle #omelettrees #makermovement #handmadesg #handmadeceramics #smallbatch #handcrafted #handmadeisbetter #madeinsingapore #madeinsg #potteryforall
